Thoughts on the Kon Mari Method

I began the Kon Mari Method in the beginning of the New Year.  I began with the goal to have it completed by June 30/2016.  I achieved this goal a little early.  Unfortunately for the blog, I didn't document the process as well as I would have liked.  Hubby had gotten a job 6 hours away and we were trying to get the house ready to sell.  I blew through the house implementing the Kon Mari Method and purging everything that didn't "spark joy".

The Kon Mari Method was most effective in my closet.  You can see that post here.  I have done some shopping since.  I didn't keep much in the way of summer clothes so I had to buy some new clothes so I wouldn't melt this summer!  It is easier for me to be more discerning with my clothes now that I have the "spark joy" idea in the back of my mind.  There were a few purchases that I made for the summer that really didn't work the way I wanted them to.  It was easier for me to let them go and consider them a lesson learned.

The Kon Mari Method did work in the rest of my home, but the other results weren't quite as shocking as my closet.  Hubby and I have done a pretty good job keeping a minimal amount of things so that really helped.

I have a few before and after shots of my hair styling products, makeup and papers.  I thought I would share them with you.

The total papers that I had are all three piles.  I only kept the pile on the far right.

Marie Kondo alludes to the fact that once you are done purging, you may feel like getting rid of more with time.  She says that it is due to the fact that you become more in tune with what brings you joy.  I agree with her on this.  Even though we have completed going through our house, I am itching to do it again.  I think that you begin to realize what really contributes joy to your life and what doesn't. I am glad that I read the book and tried the method.  It wasn't truly life changing but it certainly helped lead me to more minimalism, which I appreciated.

Have you tried the Kon-Mari Method?  What did you think?

  1. I started using this method on January 1 as well! I'm not following it 100% for everything, but it has really helped me purge a TON of stuff this past year. I still have a couple more rooms to do, but our house is already so much lighter!

  2. Don't hate me, Ashley! LOL But I was a little disappointed with this book. There were definitely some good takeaways though, and I'm glad it has made a difference for you! I used her way of folding for my kitchen towels and the towels fit in the drawer so much better than before.

    1. I think I understand what you mean about being disappointed. I felt like the book was extremely helpful with my clothes but only marginally helpful everywhere else. I am glad you found the folding tips helpful!

  3. This is awesome!!! I've only done it partially with my closet. I'm going to do a big cleanout and list everything on Poshmark!
